“Evening Embers Study”
12” x 12”
Oil on Canvas
$350
Forging out a moment of reprieve in a hectic world by taking a deep breath and looking up to the sky. That’s the experience I try to recreate with my paintings. Treading a wobbly line somewhere between abstraction and realism, my work taps into the familiarity, comfort and beauty of the natural world, whilst nudging at the edginess of abstraction. The paintings hint at images of sky, leaves, and branches, blurred shapes, vibrant colours and complex layering take them beyond the representational.
I use glazes of acrylic paint to build up multiple layers of translucent colour, creating depth and luminosity on the canvas. I apply rich, impasto oil paint as a final touch, providing an opaque contrast to the glassy layers below. I work with vibrant hues to evoke visceral feelings from the viewer and to encourage a sort of pause; a moment of reprieve, like taking a deep breath, and looking up to the sky.
