I am a contemporary artist based in Toronto and a former student of fine art at OCAD University. Through textural landscapes and hazy compositions, I create abstract expressionist pieces that reflect my longing for a deeper connection to my surroundings and to the stories that have shaped my world. My paintings share an earthy quality with an underlying vibrancy, with each piece possessing atmospheric compositions and textural layers brought to life through a mix of acrylics, plaster and pastels. My aesthetic is strongly inspired by my early years growing up in South Africa and by my desire to explore and connect with new cultures and landscapes. Despite studying photography and fine art at OCAD, I consider myself more of a self-taught painter since my practice has been shaped by curiosity and experimentation rather than formality.
The raw textural surfaces of my pieces reflect the rugged, untamed beauty of the African landscape, while the local plant life, textiles and street art have heavily influenced my colour
palette, subject matter and overall aesthetic. I seek to explore contrasts, where calm brushstrokes meet the chaos of pencil lines, and vibrant colours connect with muted tones
to create balance and quiet tension within each piece. The layers of texture, pencil markings and slow drips of paint built into my work allow me and my audience to take a slower pace in
order to explore the intricate details and quiet tension within each painting.
Prior to creating Roadside Studio, I owned and operated Roadside Florist, an event floral design studio specializing in wild and unconventional arrangements. Much like my paintings,
my floral arrangements are treated as pieces of art - raw and textured, inspired by nature and infused with unexpected elements of visual interest. Whether I’m creating with flowers
or paint, exploring ideas along a tablescape or landscape, these two worlds are forever intertwined in my artistic expression.
