Heike Blohm

Heike is an artist with a passion for working and creating with textiles. While other artists may use pen and ink or paint and a brush to draw with, Heike uses a needle and thread to create her trees and landscapes.  Textures play a big part in her work and to that end Heike utilizes many different textiles to achieve the desired effect. Her favorite background to work on is a natural linen, all the better if the linen has been repurposed from clothing or old curtains. Heike collects worn textiles, scraps, old silk scarves and wool leftovers, amongst other items, to use in her work as she is a big believer in not wasting anything. Her goal is to transform these textiles into pieces of art that evoke glimpses of the strong heart of the Canadian Landscape. It’s not about a realistic translation but a chance to find the quietness we all so badly need these days.

Heike’s “Over the Moon” series was born from numerous trips to British Columbia to visit her daughter  - the moon was inspired by a two year old grandsons obsession with saying goodnight to the pale orb at bedtime.

The textures when working with wool scraps on linen are especially delicious when every single piece of wool was saved from the landfill and stitched onto old faded linen curtains. The beautiful ceramics buttons were created by ceramic artist and friend Rhonda Uppington.
