Born and raised in Ontario’s Kawartha region, David developed a strong connection to nature early in life.
In Brushes with Nature, he returns to that connection through the landscapes of Algonquin Park, Muskoka and Georgian Bay, places that continue to inspire his work today.
Lakes, rocky shorelines, windswept trees and changing skies are familiar subjects in David’s work, brought to life through bold brushstrokes, rich colour and layers of texture. He is particularly interested in how a single brushstroke can suggest something without completely defining it, leaving room for each viewer to find their own details and stories within a painting.
There is a strong sense of memory in these landscapes, too. David describes it simply as “the feeling of a memory of the fresh air in Northern Ontario.” His paintings can recall a particular lake or shoreline, time spent at the cottage, a walk through the woods, or simply the familiar feeling of being surrounded by nature.
Painting In The Moment
David describes himself as an impatient painter - something that has become an important part of the way he works.
He wants the emotion of an image to appear quickly, capturing the energy of a moment without overworking it.
Each painting begins with a pencil sketch to establish the composition, followed by India ink to refine its shapes.
After grounding the canvas in colour, David builds the image through larger areas of dark and light before adding the details and highlights that bring it to life. His brushstrokes remain visible, allowing the texture and movement of the paint itself to become part of the finished work.
Influenced by Tom Thomson, Arthur Lismer and Bruno Côté, David shares a long-standing fascination with the Canadian landscape
while bringing his own approach to colour, texture and movement.
Goodnight Jack
The feature painting of Brushes with Nature,
our featured piece, “Goodnight Jack,” captures one of David’s favourite moments in nature:
the end of the day.
Drawn to the contrast of cool, dark rocks against the final touches of warm sunlight on the clouds and branches,
David describes the light as “saying goodbye after playing with the countryside all day.”
The movement of the painting is especially important to him. The branches reach across the sky while the clouds move around them, like dance partners above the water. For David, it is these small moments of light, movement and changing colour that make the Northern Ontario landscape such an enduring source of inspiration.
